This sixth release of the quintet was released in March of 1995 to coincide with a tour we did in the U.K and Europe. Most of the material comes from a performance in Holland that also yielded "The Marmalade King (Hat Art 6164). It features quintet versions of pieces that were first recorded on the HatArt "Down to the Wire" quartet cd from 1990 including "If you Like" and "Waltz Anywhere". Also featured is "Slamadam" which was first heard on "Demon Chaser"cd also on Hat Art. The works have evolved quite a bit from the time of their first recording. A combination of two earlier works "Taffia" (Hat Art cd 6000, "Special Detail" and "Threnody for Charles Mingus" which comes from the quintet's first recording "Outerbridge Crossing" Sound Aspects (SA 017) is also part of this program. Closing the cd is a relaxed blues, first recorded with BassDrumBone called "Pumbum". Overall this record features some wonderful soloing from each member of the quintet. It has been out of print for many years.

This recording is culled from performances taken from three different tours of the quintet. The first three works were taken from the first half of a concert given in February of ·93 in Bussum, Holland, Ernst Reijseger’s home town. At the time the primary goal of this concert/recording session was to document an extended suite entitled The Marmalade King. The recording of that suite is scheduled to be released later this year.
As it turned out the other half of the concert yielded some very strong performances of previously recorded works. Two of the works "If you like" and "Waltz Anywhere" were first performed and recorded as a quartet (Down to the Wire hatArt 6121 ). The quintet became a quartet on that tour because a few days before the tour was to start, Ernst was hospitalized with a slipped disk. The first version of "Slamadam" opens the recording Demon Chaser (hatArt 61 37). This second version seems to pick up where the first version left off, often teetering gleefully on the edge of total abandon.
"Threnody/Taffia" is of course a combination of two works, "Threnody for Charles Mingus" (Outerbridge Crossing, Sound Aspects 017) and the second half of "Taffia" (Special Detail, hatArt 6084). The combined performance of these works creates a vehicle for an extended solo statement by each member of the quintet.
"Pumbum", a traditional blues first recorded by BassDrumBone (You Be, Minor Music 007) also acts as a springboard for the quartet to open up and play. It's taken from an encore of a performance from the quartet tour.
This recording offers us the chance to see how some of the repertoire has developed since its initial documentation on CD and in so doing will underscore the exceptional abilities of each member of the group. I must thank all the promoters, producers, agents and writers who have supported the quintet and given us the chance to develop a sound. A year or so ago I downloaded a Big Satan concert on a torrent site. Under the band credits it read "Marc Ducret: Awesomeness." That pretty much sums him up for me. A fabulous sextet release here, with his regular trio augmented by sax, trumpet and trombone. The latter is played by his regular sparring partner Samuel Blaser.
