about

From time to time this live recording of the quintet would pop up on the shuffle play of my iPod (yes I still listen to music on an iPod). Every time I heard one of the pieces from this performance I recognized that this was the critical moment that the last incarnation of my quintet found its collective sound. All of the quintet’s I was so fortunate to have between 1985 and 2013 formed a personal approach to the demands my musical constructions offered. This last quintet configuration had just met to rehearse this music for the first time on the afternoon of this performance at Oscar Noriega's nearby apartment in Brooklyn. Ellery was the only member who had had experience with most of these pieces from a quartet setting that was active at various times between 1998 and 2007. Considering the NY style set up for the concert, meaning no time to really prepare properly for such detailed notation and complex form navigation, let alone coming to know the music as a group - all one can say is that this performance reflects the outstanding ability, quicksilver creativity and unshakable nerve of everyone on the bandstand.

As a band leader there were times when I could only offer a ‘hang on for dear life’ performance condition for some of the gigs I was able to organize - mostly thanks to having next to no budget to rehearse. One could say that this challenge was the actual ‘cutting edge’ of it’s time, given there was no net to catch us if we fell. No strangers to risk, we invariably made mistakes that were instantly overturned by the sheer power of the collective shared adventure and the possibility this music had to offer. On this evening everyone contributes exceptional individual moments of invention and interaction, from graceful nuance to gleefully unhinged.

And there was something about this space. This recording is just two mics deftly placed that catch the group which, other than the bass and guitar amps, is entirely acoustic. You feel the space and the real nature of live music in a way that every time it popped up on that shuffle play I repeated to myself … this needs to be heard some day !
