about

This recording was the first to be released after BassDrumBone returned to active touring in 1993 after a six year hiatus. Recorded with and without an audience at the Bim Huis in the beginning of 1996 the recording combines a few revisited works of previously recorded material including "Speak Brother" (originally released on "Kwambe") re-titled "Speak Again Brother". Most of the recording features previously unrecorded material including two from Ray, "Lips Apart" and the title track "Hence the Real Reason" several from Mark including "Moto Proto", "Fictionary". Also featured on the recording is one of Gerry's we had played for many years, often as an encore but never recorded, "When Zweeble Walked By". There are two works from Gerry which for publishing reasons have different titles on this release, "For Don C", is originally titled "Cherry Pickin" (a piece for Don Cherry), and "The Disappearing Afternoon" is an alternate title for "The River that Walked By".

The recording was by one of our favorite engineers, Dick Lucas, who passed on in 2020. Dick Lucas later released "March of Dimes" from a performance a year later than this concert on his own Data Records. Dick had a true understanding of our music and masterfully recorded this straight to two track. Thanks also goes to Piet Hein van de Poel and Co de Kloet who broadcast some of this concert on the Dutch NPS radio. And always thanks goes to Huub van Riel who was the chief of the Bim Huis for many years and a great supporter of our trio.
