about

This is a BandCamp only release of some remarkable live performances of repertoire from the 1985 studio recording of "Outerbridge Crossing" Included are three works from a 1989 Knitting Factory performance in New York City of the quintet and then from 1991, a quartet encore performed in Esslingen, Germany. The quintet closely resembles the same personnel of the original studio release. The quartet is from the later European version of the quartet/quintet that began in 1990.

These early works for my quintet show the genesis and development of what would be the central vehicle for my composition between 1985 and 2013. The recording from the quintet was taken from a studio soundboard onto my VHS digital recorder (an early relic of digital recording technology). The grouping is almost identical to the original recording, with Steve Swell in place of Ray Anderson.

The Quartet encore is taken from a cassette I had from what was supposed to a be a quintet tour performance, but Ernst Reijseger was unable to come due to serious problems with his knees at the time. This tour eventually yielded the CD "Down to the Wire" but in this Esslingen encore we played a version of "Outerbridge Crossing". The sound quality is clearly inferior to the NY recording but the performance is nothing short of spectacular. At its most intense crescendo it is distorted as the recording machinery (let alone the audience) experience a full throttle explosion of intensity. Despite the distortion I want you to have the opportunity to hear it as it shows something about this music not documented elsewhere.
